National Children's Pet Poetry Contest

APPA Launches Second Annual National Children's Pet Poetry Contest

Through our Pets Add Life Campaign, we are launching our second annual national children's pet poetry contest to engage our nation's youth in the joy and excitement of pet ownership.

Third-Fifth grade students from around the nation are invited to write a unique poem about their pets, what they love about them, the joys they bring, then post it online by February 15, 2010 at 5:00pm EST to qualify for scholarship dollars and other prizes.

Winners will receive pet products and a "by-line" in a nationally circulated publication and their classroom will win a $1,000 scholarship to spend on pet related education.

Contest Details

You must be a current 3rd-5th grade student to enter.

We welcome creativity, and are completely open to any pet related poem topic or theme. Students can choose to write about their own pets, how much they love their pets, specific joys the pets bring them, why they have a pet, how the pet likes to play, how a pet has changed their lives, or even about a relationship with a relative’s/friend’s pet, etc...

Poems should not exceed 100 words.

Submitted poems must be original and cannot reflect the work of another author.
The top 6 poems (two from each grade) will be published in an issue of a major pet consumer publication, and each winner’s parent or legal guardian agrees to the use of the winner’s name, picture and the publication of the winning entry.

Each winner will receive a $250 gift certificate for pet products .

Six winning poems (6) will be selected nationally, and those students’ classrooms will receive a $1,000 scholarship (each) to spend on pet related education such as a field trip for their class to an area animal shelter, zoo or other pet related venue, books, or pets in the classroom.

Judging
Our panel of judges will select the top 6 most creative, well-written, inspiring and/or compelling pet poems.  All decisions are in the judges’ complete discretion, and are not subject to review.

There will be 6 grand prize winners (two from each grade) whose classrooms will each receive the $1,000 scholarship for pet related education.
