Poetry Contest Winner Takes Class to New Jersey Zoo to Celebrate AwardThe J. Mason Tomlin 5th grade class enjoyed a beautiful day of learning at Popcorn Park Zoo in Forked River, New Jersey- all thanks to one 2010 APPA National Children’s Pet Poetry Contest winner, Pierce. Pierce, who was one of six total contest winners nationwide for his poem, “Honey”, received a $250 gift certificate for pet products, a “by-line in a nationally circulated publication, and a $1,000 scholarship for his classroom to be spent on pet-related education. Together with his teacher and classmates, the group decided to use the scholarship dollars in part to pay for a class field-trip to the zoo where students learned first-hand the importance of careful pet selection and responsible animal stewardship. The Popcorn Park Zoo in Forked River is considered unique to the area as it encourages interaction by giving every visitor a red and white box of popcorn to feed the animals. The kids enjoyed feeding the Camel, Princess, and spending the day learning about responsible pet ownership. Click to view the winners of the 2010 APPA National Children’s Pet Poetry Contest. |
